McGwire Comes Clean

In a move that should come to a surprise to approximately no one, Mark McGwire has finally admitted to steroid use, off and on for a decade.

Next up? Bonds, Clemens, Sosa?

ESPN is reporting the following:

NEW YORK — Mark McGwire finally came clean Monday, admitting he used steroids when he broke baseball’s home run record in 1998.

McGwire said in a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday that he used steroids on and off for nearly a decade.

“I wish I had never touched steroids,” McGwire said in a statement. “It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era.”

The reasoning was Andy Pettitte-esque…

“During the mid-’90s, I went on the DL seven times and missed 228 games over five years,” McGwire said in the statement. “I experienced a lot of injuries, including a ribcage strain, a torn left heel muscle, a stress fracture of the left heel, and a torn right heel muscle. It was definitely a miserable bunch of years, and I told myself that steroids could help me recover faster. I thought they would help me heal and prevent injuries, too.”

Well, that is that. Pretty unfortunate.

Hawk’s In, 4 More Sure HOF members Denied

Sorry for the late post; Had to finish shoveling the mass of snow off the deck. Can’t wait for ball season! Andre “The Hawk” Dawson was granted membership today to the The National Baseball Hall of Fame. A much deserved honor. With 2774 hits and 438 long balls to go with a Rookie of the Year and MVP honor it was a much deserved and late nod to the man that will go into The Hall as either an Expo or a Cubbie Bear. That debate will be decided by the board. There were however four ballplayers that were left out of The Hall this year. Bert Blyleven with his 287 career wins was denied in his thirteenth year of eligibility by a mere two votes. Roberto Alomar, Barry Larkin, and Edgar Martinez were also denied as first year eligible players. Two pure position players that were thought to have a great chance of enshrinement and the controversial first DH inducted in The Hall all fell short with Alomar missing by only five votes.

Big Unit Hangs Up His Cleats

Regarded both as one of the MLB’s all-time best pitchers and all-time ugliest dudes, Randy Johnson is calling it quits. I think his HoF bid is a no-brainer. Byrd to Cubs

Hendry did it… ESPN is reporting that Byrd is heading to the Cubbies for 3yr / $15mil The Cubs hope Byrd can fill their center field void. Byrd is a disciple of hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo, who also will be starting his first season on the north side after coming over from the Rangers. The [...]

Jason Bay, Meet Mr. Met

2004 National League Rookie of the Year and three-time All-Star Jason Bay is officially a Met…to the tune of 4yr/$66mil. Also of note, the stupid Mets are looking at Bengie Molina, who wants $20 mil/yr. Good luck with that.

DeRo al Los Gigantes

Los Gigantes de San Francisco signed Mark DeRosa to a two year deal. Boo. Granted, DeRo is 35 and coming off of a wrist injury, but I was holding out hope that he might make a triumphant return to the Friendly Confines. After missing the boat on Cameron, Capps, Lackey, etc., I guess I should [...]

Dark Horse: Nyjer Morgan

I read a very unsubstantiated rumor over on waxpaperbeercup…apparently someone Tweeted the possibility of Nyjer Morgan coming to the Northside. Compare his numbers from 2009 to those of our resident speedster*, Theriot Nyjer Morgan — 42 SB, .307 AVG, .388 SLG, 120 games Ryan Theriot — 21 SB, .284 AVG, .369 SLG, 154 games Granted, [...]
